I can think of no better place to be in Autumn than southern West Virginia, with its mountains and gorges and abundance of hardwood trees barely holding on to those leaves turning vivid colors of red, orange and yellow. West Virginia New River Gorge Area provides ample opportunities for photography, from the steel-arched 3030 foot-long Bridge that spans the gorge to abundant waterfalls along the river and its tributaries. Babcock State Park is located along the New River Gorge and the Glade Creek Grist Mill is the subject of many photos – no exception here! While everyone was staying home during the Pandemic of 2020-2021, changes were underway to designate the New River Gorge as our 63rd National Park in 2021!
Hope you enjoy this selection of images from that region.

3 Nov 2024I was raised in Cabin Creek, WV, from 1945-54, then my father, who worked as a supervisor for the Pure Oil Company, was transferred to Texas. Fast forward to 1979, while serving in the US Navy, I was posted to the Pentagon. We (wife and I) made a few trips back to WV, but weren’t too impressed with the economy of the state at that time, but in 1993 (the year after my retirement), a friend and I went white water rafting on the lower New River. Wow, the water was cold and beautiful at the same time-later that morning I fractured my back in three places! We did everything wrong, hit the rock and all of us leaned back and of course, the raft flipped over and I hit an underwater rock. Over the years after that, we made several trips back to the Beckley area of West Virginia and yes, went white water rafting again and again! We stayed in Virginia until my wife retired from the Virginia education system and then made our move back to Texas. My brothers Jim and Bill, both went through school and college in WV, before I came along. Bill was known to leap off of WV bridges, wherever he found them – don’t think that the Gorge was one of them though! Beautiful prints.
