Quaint New England villages, covered bridges, waterfalls and beautiful autumn colors grace the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Known as a summer recreational area for families with 17 attractions as well as a skiing/winter sport haven in the winter, the fall colors on the mountains draw photographers and artists to the area. The White Mountains are part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and the most rugged mountains in New England. I booked months in advance for a steam-powered cog railway ride to the top of Mt Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern USA. Mt Washington is known for erratic weather, and a record-breaking measured windspeed of 231 miles per hour. The weather at the base of the mountain was clear but overcast, but halfway up the peak the fog rolled in and the promised view of New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean didn’t happen. In fact, visibility was just a few feet in front of me, the ground was ice, and the wind was so cuttingly cold it was hard to breath. I have included a photo of the sign covered in hoar frost and another of the train.
