Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube. It consists of two districts – the hilly Buda district on one side of the river with flat Pest on the other. The two sides are connected by the 19th-century Chain Bridge. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward. The Hungarians arrived in the territory in the late 9th century. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views. All of these places I visited on my 2018 tour of Central Europe which included a dinner cruise on the Danube and photographs of the beautiful parliament, castle and other historic buildings. I hope you enjoy these select visions of Budapest.
