Following in the tradition of years past, this is my selection for Favorite Photos of 2018. Compared to last year, I made far fewer excursions but to more expensive locations. Two of the three trips were to Europe and one to Canada.
By far the favorite trip of the year was to the Cinque Terre in Italy. I photographed in towns and villages along the Italian Riviera and in four of the five/“Cinque” Terre medieval hillside villages, traveling primarily by train or boat. No other vehicular traffic is permitted (or even possible) on the narrow passageways and steep stairways. This is an amazing area but definitely designed for the fit and healthy! Please check out the gallery of images for each town/village here .
Mid-summer I photographed in the spectacular Lake Louise area of Banff National Park, Alberta Canada, and ventured into Yoho National Park in British Columbia.. This is the land of Canada’s Rocky Mountains with glaciers and so many glacier-fed lakes. The turquoise-blue water created by glacial melt was stunning and travel along the Icefield Parkway was exhilarating. The only regret is that smoke from fires in Russia blocked many anticipated sunrises and sunsets, and in the end I was struggling to find 4 images I loved, so I’ve selected only 3.
In the fall I traveled with six friends to Central Europe. This was a chance to spend a few days touring in six different countries and marvel at the historical architecture and beautiful churches. Cities and countries visited include Budapest in Hungary, Zagreb in Croatia, Ljubljana and Bled in Slovenia, Innsbruck in Austria, Oberammergau and Munich in Germany, and Prague in the Czech Republic. Because of travel in a group, most of my photos are “street” photography but I believe I captured some history and culture in these photos. There is a gallery for each country, so please take a look!
