The Bluenose Lodge is a traditional captain’s house in Lunenburg and was an exceptional, unabashedly dream of a place to stay. My room on the second floor was lovely, with blue stripped wallpaper and original pine wood floors, painted wainscot, very high ceiling, antique furniture, and the hand basin is in the room while the “bathroom” is ensuite. Outside my room in a very wide “hall” was a sitting room in the bump out above the front door (an unusual architectural feature known as the “Lunenburg bump”). Another sitting room was midway down the flight of stairs, plus the main sitting room on the first floor opposite the restaurant. Speaking of restaurant – I was treated to formal dining daily, with a different breakfast “menu” every day (highlights – lobster and seafood hash, eggs Benedict) and fantastic 3 course dinners (lobster, chicken pasta curry, pork tenderloin stuffed with cranberries and apples, pan seared haddock….all fantastic main courses). Open to non-residents and highly recommended!
I was there on a photography workshop lead by the brilliant photographer Andre Gallant. It just so happened that all 8 of the participants were women! But it was a great group and such a variety of photographic styles. Only the first morning did we have a sunrise – every other morning, afternoon and evening was either socked in by fog or raining fairly regularly. It was a great exercise in shooting in the rain, and so far my camera has held up while dripping wet. Even the “rain jacket” on the camera couldn’t keep the camera dry as I was constantly pulling it back to change focal length lol.
My schedule illustrated:
Monday: sunrise at Blue Rocks fishing village. Afternoon panning exercise with on tree trunks, and search for textures in a cemetery.
Tuesday: morning “dreamscapes”; afternoon at Peggy’s Cove.
Wednesday: morning: shoot 12 images only that illustrate “Miksang” (minimalism, contemplative); afternoon: photograph flowers to combine with the textures shot on Monday to create a montage.
Thursday: morning fog enveloping trees then to Mahone Bay for lunch and photography.
Friday Project – my project was to go to Blue Rocks and create 15 photos before 12:30pm, come back to download and process and have ready for a slide show by 4:30pm. Since the day was again foggy, followed by rain and drizzle, I decided to process all images in black&white. Here is just one photo:
